This document is for people that are new to electronic schematics. It covers the basics of what is on a schematic and what it means.
Abstract
Electronic circuit schematics are the “blueprints” of electronic components, their details, and the connections between them. They are a graphical depiction of the design of an electronic circuit which is later translated into a functioning circuit board. The challenge with reading an electronic schematic is the varying conventions, notations, and levels of detail. This paper aims to lay out the basics of reading an electronics schematic while distinguishing between the varying conventions and notations that can be seen in them. The background of electronic schematics will initially be discussed. Then a top-down approach will be taken by discussing how to decipher the components in a schematic, the representation of the connections between components, and finally other markings and details that can be found on a schematic.
